Round Rock trustees to set school boundaries tonight

Round Rock school district trustees will decide tonight where to draw new school boundaries, a topic that has riled numerous parents and property owners for weeks and has pitted some neighborhoods against each other.

The boundary changes, which will affect various elementary, middle and high schools in the district, will alleviate crowding at some existing campuses and assign students to several new schools, including Cedar Ridge High School, which is set to open in the 2010-11 school year. The campus, which is east of Interstate 35 near the Forest Creek subdivision, will be the fifth high school in the 41,500-student district.

Austin City Council Votes to Ban Cell Phones While Driving

The Austin City Council took a big step Wednesday towards banning texting and driving throughout the city.

The council voted unanimously to have the ban written into a city ordinance. That will take city staffers a few months. Council members will then have to approve that ordinance before it becomes law.

Some Round Rock drivers have been putting their phones down for nearly a year.

Appraisals rise a little in Hays, stumble a little in Williamson

Property tax appraisals in Hays County rose on average nearly 2 percent, the smallest increase in several years, but in Williamson County they dipped 1.3 percent, according to appraisal officials in both counties.

The average home value in Hays rose 1.9 percent, to $167,440. In 2008, the average increased almost 7 percent.

In Williamson County, the average value fell 1.3 percent, to $188,523, Chief Appraiser Alvin Lankford said Friday.

Appraised home values rise in Travis County, decline in Williamson County since 2008

Home values increased by 5 percent in Travis County over the last year as neighboring Williamson County experienced a 1.3 percent decline.

Travis County’s average homestead appraisal rose from $281,623 in 2008 to $295,747 in 2009. The average value in the Williamson Central Appraisal District is $188,523 this year, compared with an average of $191,072 last year.

The figures are based on each home’s value as of Jan. 1. WCAD officials have been conducting evaluations in recent months and began mailing appraisal notices to homeowners April 24.

The Round Rock Chamber of Commerce honored outgoing and incoming board members along with community and business leaders at its annual awards banquet on Tuesday at the Austin Marriott North.

Posey McClung was honored with the Chamber's Lifetime Achievement Award. Among a long list of accomplishments, McClung is a charter member of the Round Rock AARP and served as a national representative for the organization in 1992, founded the Round Rock Senior Citizens Foundation and has been involved in many organizations including Meals on Wheels, Blue Santa, Coats for Kids, Round Rock ISD Partners in Education and Round Rock Volunteer Center.

RRISD, HISD meet federal AYP guidelines

ACC Round Rock campus to be pedestrian-friendly

Austin Community College's $119 million Round Rock campus, which is scheduled to open in two years, will have five buildings and a pedestrian-friendly layout, giving it a more traditional college look than that of ACC's other campuses.

A master plan unveiled this week depicts a leafy campus with parking concentrated on the perimeter and walking access within 10 minutes to a branch of Texas State University-San Marcos, the Texas A&M University System's health campus, a hospital, housing, a public park and other development. "This campus will have a big emphasis on pedestrian walkways," Stephen Kinslow, ACC's president, said Wednesday. "I do think it will be a very beautiful campus."

A glimpse of evacuee shelters around Austin

Here's what evacuees see as they enter the Austin Convention Center. Our cameras were allowed in the shelter Monday afternoon. Besides the essentials, volunteers try to accommodate everyone with extras like Internet access as well as board games and entertainment for children. Some evacuees could stay in the shelter for as long as it takes for them to get back home. The shelters in two Round Rock schools are set to close by the end of the day Tuesday.
